Why You Must Love Yourself as If Your Life Depends on It

As you love yourself, life loves you back. I don’t think it has a choice either. I can’t explain how it works, but I know it to be true. – Kamal Ravikant
I think people, books, blog posts and pretty much everything come in to your life when you need them to. I wandered out my door the other morning, walking around like and old man who had just woken up from a dream, only to realize that 20 years had gone by in a flash. Only it wasn’t a dream. It was real. I was thinking thoughts so dark that I can’t even bring myself to write them on the screen because that would just make them way too real.
That’s not what people come here for. That’s not what you’re in my class for…. and then I remembered something simple from earlier in the week: Love Yourself as if your life depends on it (because it does).
I kept walking and remembered the wise words of my new friend Kamal Ravikant, who I interviewed for BlogcastFM. As silly as it seemed I put the headphones on and kept thinking “I love myself I love myself.. I love myself.” 20 minutes went by and even though I had been fighting off a fever and cold, I suddenly felt better. The darkness became a bit lighter. The negative spiral stopped. I found a bit of peace.
The afternoon ended and I walked out the door again. This time I wandered over to Starbucks to finish reading James Altucher’s book, How to Be the Luckiest Person Alive…. For a moment, I thought “well I don’t feel like the luckiest person alive.” Then I remembered to love myself as if my life depended on it.
The downward spiral stopped, dead in its tracks, almost as if it was stunned that I had defeated it with such simplicity. Actually the real defeat of anything like this is simply to walk away from the fight. When you stop resisting what’s there, it no longer makes you nuts. If you’re wondering how to defeat resistance, I’m beginning to realize it’s simple.
