Who’s got your back?

by srinirao on May 20, 2009

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the kickoff of Keith Ferrazi’s book tour for his new book Who’s got your back? If you don’t know much about Keith Ferrazi, check out his bio. He was one of the youngest partners ever at Deloitte Consulting and one of the youngest CMO’s at Starwood hotels. But underneath all of that isĀ  a very down to earth guy who seems to genuinely care about seeing people improve the quality of their personal and professional lives.

So, what is the premise of Who’s got your back? Keith talked about the fact that relationships that we build with people are ultimately responsible for our success. But, with Who’s got your back?, he’s taken the concept of peer-support groups and applied to all areas of your life. The same concepts are ironically used in AA meetings, weight watchers, and other areas where people have had to overcome problems. Yet, Keith takes this approach to accomplishing goals. The idea is to create what he called "Lifeline" relationships. These people will hold you accountable and keep you on your game and commit to making you a success, and your job is to do the same for them.

So, think about Who’s got your back? If you don’t think anybody does, start figuring out the people that might be appropriate to be part of your lifeline. Something tells me this is the beginning of the extraordinary life I’ve dreamed about for years, and it will be for you too if you take a few small steps in the right direction. As Lao Tzu said "The Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Very good concept. I would agree with the approach that to be successful personally as well as professionally, you would need to identify these “Lifelines” and depend on them as how they are called…Lifelines.

Hi Sreenivas,

This is a great concept. I really liked the whole idea of peer group egging us on, and in return we reciprocate the same. What a novel idea and how beautiful life could be.
That’s phenomenal as I imagine.
Thanks for bringing this thing up!
I liked your blog and will visit often :)
Thanks

The book sounds really interesting. I definitely think that other people and our relationships with them are so important to our success. Personally I have a great boss who has really given me a lot of opportunities. I know I wouldn’t be where I am right now if he hadn’t been so encouraging and supportive of me!
