The Jack Bauer Guide to Getting Shi%#$ Done

311396897 1407539ed9 The Jack Bauer Guide to Getting Shi%#$ Done

Over the last week I’ve found myself absorbed in old seasons of 24. Despite having seen them already, for some reason they are still entertaining.  Let’s face it. Jack Bauer is a bonafide badass and can teach us a thing or two about getting shi#$# done. Jack Bauer can stop a nuclear warhead from being launched in the span of 24 hours, and yet most of us don’t achieve near this level of productivity. He seems to get more done in one day than most of us do in a year. So, what is that Jack Bauer can teach us about getting shi#$# done?

Time Constraints/Urgency: One thing that Jack Bauer is constantly faced with this the pressure of getting things done under a strict timeline. Granted, writing a blog post is not as urgent of an issue as stopping a nuclear warhead. But, what if we implemented time constraints into our working lives and left ourselves no choice but to get all this shi#$# done.  Our productivity might be so effective that we could work one day and get so much done on that one day that we don’t have to work much the rest of the week or if we are really good, the rest of the year. Hell, if you are Jack Bauer you show up once every 2 years for work.

Trust Your Instincts: Given all the conspiracies, cover ups and diversions that occur, Jack Bauer always seems to be right on the money about what the next move should be. Everything is a chess game and he’s always a few moves ahead. Be a few moves ahead and you’ll probably get alot more done than you originally planned to.

Ask for Forgiveness, Not Permission: If the tasks you need to get done are in the context of a working environment, then just do whatever the hell you need to do. Jack Bauer continually violates CTU protocols but at the end of the day, he achieves an end result. Rules are not for you or me. So, fu#$# em.

Keep Your Head in the Game: One thing that amazes me is how Jack Bauer manages to keep his head in the game despite being under intense pressure. Millions of people are not going to be harmed if you don’t get your  shi#$# done, so you really have it easy when it comes to keeping your head in the game. This is really about saying present  and focusing on exactly what you re doing.

Be Relentless: If there’s anything that sets Jack Bauer apart from the rest of the CTU agents is that he’s relentless. He’s willing to get the job done at any cost. While I“m not advocating that you torture and torment people in order get to your end result, I think this kind of determination might serve you well as you attempt to increase your productivity.

AT the end of the day,  nobody deals with the amount of bullshi#$# that Jack puts up with in one day. One of the mysteries of 24 is that Jack never eats, sleeps or takes a shi#$# in 24 hours.  Under these circumstances he manages to get all this stuff done. So, really maybe we have no excuse for our lack of productivity other than the fact that we’re just fuc#$#ing lazy.

Hey buddy,

Ask for forgiveness not permission. This is a great rule for every entrepreneur. It goes far also, very far into what we need to do in order to be successful.

We often overestimate how hard our audience, clients or colleagues will come down on us if we make a genuine mistake. Not a mistake because we were sloppy and gave a half hearted effort, no, I mean a real failure, simply because we tried something new and it didn't work.

We always think that people will never forgive us. Guess what? They do! Even massive disasters like the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico hasn't stopped people from buying gas at BP stations.
So what does that say about our efforts?
Last I checked if we mess up we aren't going to destroy an entire coast line :)

Cheers Srini, great material as always, the clean air of CR is doing you good.

John,

I think that we've gotten so used to asking for permission and following the rules that somewhere along the way we lost site of thinking for ourselves. Sometimes are biggest mistakes end up being the biggest and most valuable lessons in our lives. I love the BP example and yep people are still buying gas from them. As far as the CR air, living the dream is finally starting to feel like it.

I regularly write articles for magazines and I tend to store up writing these for times when I’m on the train between London and Brighton. The journey is almost exactly one hour, so it’s a challenge to write 1500 words in that time, but it’s so great having only one focus, absorbed in the writing, absorbed in the flow. Writing can easily become lost to distractions, so these kind of boundaries can really help.

Thanks for sharing your views on time management, check out my
blog for my personal tips.

@nathan, @srini, Let's do this thing. I can do a chapter on getting sh*t done standing on my head.

@Jen: Jack definitely can teach us a few things about dealing with the corporate world and coming out on top.

@Archan: Yeah, totally. I have had bosses before who did everything by the book and played politics constantly and sadly the system rewarded them for it. However, I think most of them in the end got what was coming to them. Team members had no loyalty towards them and in all honesty one boss in particular I probably would never do a favor for.

@Ryan: Yeah, I guess I never even saw goal setting side of things when it comes to Jack Bauer. He really is relentless in pursuit of his results. When I see what he does in 24 hours, I realize most of what I need to do is really not that hard and I should be able to get a shit#$#load more work done than I normally would.

Another Big 24 fan here. A great analysis of Jack's success consciousness Srini. Jack's sense of urgency is legendary. The man has minutes to make a decision. If we could treat our day with a 1/10 of that sense of urgency imagine what we could accomplish?

He's just a driven dude who sees the end result and does whatever it takes to get there. Sometimes it's not the nicest thing but nobody can argue with his results. Anybody who comes back from the dead for his cause is a pretty goal-oriented guy in my book.

Srini,

24 is a great TV series: I watch it when I have free time. Jack is a maniac on the move. An icon, iconoclast, bend the rules sort of guy--a hero who will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Even if it means rebelling against authority figures, who are more concerned about rules and politics than the principles and results. There is no rear-view mirror where Jack is concerned. Wow!

Many of the top bosses in his organization are spearheaded by bureaucratic types, who don't understand the urgency with which you have to act in the face of danger. Such clerks are on a mission to stick to the rules and play it safe. By contrast, Jack leaps into the unknown, experiments and takes calculated risks.

Too many organizations rely on "market research" rather than creating a market for a product or service. Thus, Jack is also a metaphor for an entrepreneur.

You have to trust yourself and go out on a limb to discover what is not yet known.

Another person who comes to mind is William Shatner, who plays James T. Kirk of the USS Starship Enterprise. Watch the old re-runs of Star Trek. I am sure you'll enjoy it. Thanks for an excellent post, as usual. May the force be with you.

I think this post is great! I often talk with my coworkers about "24:" Jack's straightforward effciency, the office politics, the power struggle, etc. It all relates to someone in an office cube.
.-= Jen´s last blog ..Thankful Tuesday =-.

@Ami: Not sure where to find the braniacs, but they must be somewhere.

@Samuel: Yeah, Jack kind of misses the boat in terms of making time to care of himself and his family. Granted, every time he tire some crisis starts and that ends any possibility of a normal day. As far as eating during commercial breaks, that might be the only time :).

Nice post Srini,
I totally agree: We must keep focused on the job until it´s done. There's no time to waist if we have some challenges and goals to achieve. But we must assign time to take care of ourselves, time to eat, time with the family, time to be happy.
I think Jack eats during the commercial breaks. :-)

Love this, great analysis, great humor! But where do I get the nerdy brainiacs who'll help me off the side of their desk without telling anyone?

Here you go http://nathanhangen.com/blog/jack-bauer-guide/

and hell yeah, it would be awesome. Probably need a bit more content though :)

@Justin: Good point. If even death doesn't prevent him from getting shi$% done then we really have no excuse.

you forgot to add how even death can't stop Jack from accomplishing his goal! He has died what 3 times over the run of the show, came back and kicked A$$!
Great post, I love 24

@Nathan: I'd be glad to link your post. We should totally start a Jack Bauer Guide to blogging. That would be pretty hilarious.

We should pair this with my Jack Bauer post and create a Jack Bauer guide :)
