Hi Srinivas.

I will go ahead and steal this list and call it my lessons in 2009, at least some of them.

Good point about breaking the rules. It’s terrible to be the guy stuck not breaking a rule when the other guy is breaking it and succeeding. If I see a rule I will squash it like a cooked tomato.

I do keep a list of topics as well, and also have a set of unfinished drafts. While I like my list of topics, I would do well to clear out those unfinished drafts, or finish them, as open loops are no good. I use Google Notebook to type out my thoughts quickly when they arise.

I will continue back to writing every day. Related to that, there was a period of two months where I published every day. I might go back to that, but probably not at this time.

@Brett: I think you’re smart to forget about you analytics for a while. They’re not really valuable until you have enough data to identify trends. Regarding a plan, I think Darren’s post on problogger on posts that generate alot of comments is a great way to start thinking about content strategy and planning.

These are some really, really useful tips. Although I don’t have time to write everyday and spend most of my weekends writing.

I really like tip #2. I’m still in my first month at Dare To Express (it seems like I’ve been blogging forever! haha!) and I think I should throw away the key on Google Analytics until at least month 4. Same thing with my feedburner stats.

In fact, I think I’m going to delete my bookmarks to those sites right now so the temptation to stat-check is removed. #s 9 and 11 are also very interesting as well – maybe I’ll formulate a plan for DtE sometime this weekend.

@Henri: That’s awesome that you have so much content in the queue. I’m sure it’s going to pay off dramatically in 2010. I look forward to seeing your progress.

@Gordie: I agree that the personal stories are great. Your “Confessions of a Coke Addict” post was one of the most brilliant moves I saw on your part.

@Dave: I definitely think it is challenging to run it like a business when you start out because you don’t know what the potential revenue streams could be. For example I just got a client who brought me in to do social media work, but hired me to be his public speaking coach. So that set off a whole new direction of potential revenue streams.

Running it like a business is tough at the start. You don’t know where all the costs are, and you don’t know how to value your time.

My strategy over the last 8 months has been to write as much as possible as fast as possible, damn the torpedos.

Now that I have clients, I won’t be able to do that anymore. And that’s a good thing.

Budgeting when it’s all “outgo” instead of “income” is depressing beyond belief. =)
