The importance of what you see in the mirror

by srinirao on May 30, 2009

After going through what has been a particularly difficult week because I got turned down for a job that I really was excited about, I looked in the mirror and saw that I had let the way I looked physically deteriorate quite a bit. I hadn’t shaven since earlier in the week and started to look more and more like a bum.

After taking a shower, cleaning myself up and shaving, I started to realized the importance of what you see in the mirror.  When you don’t take care of your physical appearance it directly impacts your negative self talk.  Have you ever noticed how getting dressed up in a suit, or dress or  getting ready for some large fancy event makes you feel something entirely different. You’re overcome by a certain sense of confidence that you lacked before. You start telling yourself things like “wow, do I look good, I’m hot….etc, etc.”

So, what’s the answer, wear a suit or prom dress everyday?  That would be ridiculous.  Regardless of what we actually look like, whether we are overweight, or have any other perceived physical issues, we all have had these moments of confidence when we look in the mirror. So, go back, find out what caused them, and replicate it. The simple act of looking your best (i.e. clean shaven, decently-dressed, etc) seems to have an impact on your physiology which has a positive impact on your thought patterns.

I completely agree with this concept. When I look in the mirror and smile I feel better. When I look in the mirror and I’m crying, I feel even more upset. The way we see ourselves can impact us a great deal!
