3031455100 f5450c9645 The First Step

Far too often in life people fail to take the first step.  As I was thinking about what I was going to write this morning, I realized that I was guilty of not taking the first step; putting my fingers to the keyboard and just seeing what happens.  What causes us not to take the first step is that we don’t know what the second,  third and fourth steps will be. But, life doesn’t come with an instruction manual despite what those little books in Barnes and Noble may have you believe. Don’t get me wrong I love those books.  But to call them instruction books assumes that we can assemble our lives like a piece of furniture from Ikea.  If you’ve ever assembled furniture from Ikea then you know it’s like the adult version of Lego, and the instructions that come with Lego are easier to understand.

A while back somebody I was working with gave me a fantastic analogy to explain accomplishing something I didn’t know how to do. He said “If you were driving from LA to Chicago, you wouldn’t know that you’re going to have all green lights right?. If you were expecting all greens the entire way, you would never start your journey.”   If you’ve been a student of the Skool of Life, by now you know that sometimes life doesn’t ago according to plan.  So the lack of a clearly outlined plan shouldn’t keep you from taking that first step.

Apparently a new year is around the corner. I don’t see the New Year as a fresh start and I think resolutions are nonsense because that simply means you’ve been putting off things you should have been doing all year long. For me it’s just an opportunity to continue the things I’ve been working on and to keep taking steps in the direction of my dreams.  So today I want to encourage you to do one thing. Take the first step towards something.  Don’t worry about how the rest of it will all turn out. If you take the first step, the second, third, and fourth will become apparent. When you’re standing in a different place, the view changes and you’ll see things you didn’t see before.

I've heard it said that the first step is usually the hardest and most important step in the journey. Those who take the first step are five times more likely to carry it all the way to the end than those who talk about it for years but live in fear to actually accomplish it.

Bryan Thompson Bryan, as Lao Tzu said "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." You just have to keep charging forward and with each step you take new possibilities will be revealed.

Whatever you accomplish in life, it all starts with the first step.... and then another, and another, and so on.

There's so much more in life to gain when traveling into the unknown rather than seeing every step clearly. At least that's been my experience. But then again, I've always loved roller coaster rides :P

Inspirational post here Srini!

Mark_Harai Life wouldn't be very interesting if we knew exactly what was going ot happen. Something to be said for how unpredictable the whole thing is.

LauLau81 I'm glad you thought so. I've spent a good chunk of my life waiting for things to happen, and realized that without the first step those things wouldn' happen.

So true Srinivas! Have you read Derek Sivers book "Anything You Want"? He talks about our tendency to avoid starting big projects because of uncertainty. Instead of getting started and figuring it out, we wait for the finish line to appear magically at the starting line (guilty! hah). It's a great, quick read!

deaconbradley I've heard of the book. I need to get my hands on it. Too many times in life we don't start these things. There's a good amount of uncertainty in my life right now, but rather than second guess myself I just keep taking the first step.

I am guilty here. I know there is typically no perfect times to start something. You have to jump into the deep-end and figure it out as you go, but at least be able to swim before you jump in. I had put off grad school for several years waiting for a better time. I finally started in 2009 and graduated May 2011. I have found this to be the way I do many things - put them off and then finally jump in. I need to reflect more on why I do this. I downloaded an Audible book on how to stop procrastinating about 6 months ago but haven't started to listen to it yet. Maybe over the Holidays. LOL

TomD1999 Tom, it's funny you mentioned graduate school considering I've been there myself. I put it off ro many years thinking there was some right time to go, and I graduated in 2009 which was the worst year anybody could have come out of school. As far as the audio book on procrastinating, why not listen to the first chapter today?

For me many first steps are a function of inspiration. I'm reading STEVE JOBS by Walter Isaacson and notice that I'm being a bit more spontaneous and taking more first steps and venturing into new territory.

Rileyhar It's good to see you back here. I need to get my hands on that book. I'm sure that's an incredibly inspiring read.
