I do value very much the recommendations of the people I work with. After every web development project is complete, I kindly ask my client if they would be so kind as to write me a brief and honest recommendation about our working relationship. Have to say it's been great so far - I re-purpose them and put them on my portfolio site - gives other potential clients an opportunity to see what others are saying about me.

One great thing you made me think of is that you can expand that network of recommendations from bloggers on Linkedin and turn them into phone references. So, yes I agree you should continually cultivate good references.

@Marc: I think you have some valid points. However to say that day of reference checks is over is simply not true. I have provided three phone references for people seeking new employment in the last two months. It's a good idea to continue to cultivate future reference sources long after you have previously worked somewhere. You never know when you will need one. LinkedIn is good but not a panacea.

Definitely value in having recommendations on Linked In.
