Prolific blogging seems to be a challenge for many people and after a bit more examination I’ve discovered what the secret is that has allowed me to continually come up with new content. Earlier. I offered 10 tips for being a prolific personal development blogger and after digging a bit deeper I’ve found something quite interesting. I recently got my hands on a copy of Psychocybernetics, a book that I highly recommend.
One of the things it talks about is something called our ASM (Automatic Success Mechanism), which actually was never designed to work based on conscious thought. In fact you can give it instructions, go do something else (like go to sleep), and it will actually find the answers you are looking for. Just think of it as a delayed search engine. When you type, “what should I write about into your personal search engine”, the ASM, it will process the request for a few hours, and then you’ll have the answers. I almost always do my writing when I wake up in the morning and I have anywhere between 3-4 new ideas for blog posts when I wake up in the morning. I realized what I was doing at night before I went to sleep was thinking about what I would write about for my next blog post, and when I wake up there would be a bunch of answers.
The great thing about this is can be be applied to solving many problems. Almost every personal development book or program identifies this ability to solve problems with your subconscious. According to Psychocybernetics, the conscious mind was never engineered to solve problems. It was engineered to receive instructions and the subconscious will act up on those instructions. Think about how often you spontaneously come up with an idea or solution to a problem. This is the exact process that is being described here, but now you are aware of it. I’ve decided to apply this to my job search, my goals of generating more income, etc, etc. Do you have any ideas on how to exploit this capability of your mind? Share them here in the comments below.

You’re absolutely right, the conscious mind does not create. You divide it as conscious/subconscious, others may say right brain/left brain, and still others may say awareness/mind. The thinking mind is not creative. It can only label, symbolize and conceptualize. Creativity and intelligence (not intellect) come from awareness, not the thinking mind. It’s a powerful transforming insight, but it can take some time and effort to develop trust in awareness and let go of beliefs and ideas.
i should really re-read that book. It’s fantastic and I didn’t think of the ASM mechanism for finding ideas. I’m definitely going to try it.
Love the picture at the top dude!
Looks like a pool from the samaria Gorge in Crete / Greece!
Ciao
I really need to finish reading that book, along with Maltz’s follow-up, “Creative Living for Today: Applying Psychocybernetics”. Both are exceptional.
I’m going to use it for blog ideas too. The job hunt application is a good one, too. I’ll tell you what I come up with.
Well, maybe not I, but my ASM.
