Lately I’ve been going through many personal development books and looking at different ideas on visualization. One that I have come across since the day I got into all of this is the idea that you need to get emotional about the things you visualize. In fact, the emotion and the feeling is almost more important the pictures you make in your head. Often when we visualize we have a tendency to just go through the motions and make pictures in our heads.
The Power of Music
Fortunately, Hollywood has given us one of the greatest tricks in the world to use. Recently, I was having dinner at a friend’s house and one of the guests had also been a musician in high school. He was telling me about a concert that he saw at the Hollywood bowl, where John Williams was the conductor. If you don’t know John Williams, he was the composer of some of the most famous movie soundtracks (Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, and many more). Apparently during the concert he displayed a scene from one of the many movies he’s composed for, and showed the scene without music. Then, he had the orchestra play along with the scene, and what this other dinner guest told me was that it was incredible the impact that music had on one scene in a movie. So, you probably see where I’m going with this. Basically, add a soundtrack to your visualization practice.
What kind of music should you use?
It really is all dependent on your preference. But, we have many neuro associations already in place with songs. I literally can be taken back to a life experience every time I here a song that was playing on the radio or at parties during that period of my life. If those experiences are pleasant ones, then you can use those songs. I recommend that you stray away from anything with lyrics because you may start to pay attention to the lyrics, which could distract from your visualization. I personally prefer upbeat happy techno beats, kind of similar to the ones I mentioned when I wrote about 10 Pieces of Music to elevate your mood. The other positive side effect is that after you do this for about 10 days, anytime you listen to this piece of music, you will be returned to that joyful state that occurs during your visualization. Essentially, you are creating a neuro association between the soundtrack of your visualization and the great feeling that occurs. I’d love to hear how this works out for all of you.

Interesting post. I generally just insert emotions into my visualizations without the help of music, but I agree music can achieve the effect as well.
