How to Accomplish More in 2012 Than You Have in Your Entire Life

6617939521 617bbfc951 How to Accomplish More in 2012 Than You Have in Your Entire Life

By now you know that I think New Year’s resolutions are a complete waste of time. The very act of making a new year’s resolution is a setup for failure because of your lifetime conditioning.  But I still felt compelled to share some thoughts on the year ahead with you. As you look forward, make commitments not resolutions. The only goal I have this year is to accomplish more this year than I have in my entire life.

I think theres a substantial gap between what we’re capable of accomplishing in a day, and what most people get done in a day. If you look at that in the context of a year that gap becomes even wider. It’s time to narrow that gap and I this is how I plan to do it.

Take Action

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that in order to generate a result you need to take action.  You can sit around strategizing, brainstorming, and perfecting your idea until the end of time or end of 2012.  But, until you take that first step NOTHING is going to happen.

Show Up Everyday

I’m not going to lie to you. This takes discipline. Don’t let anything get in the way of your consistent effort on a daily basis. Momentum will be an incredibly powerful weapon in your arsenal.

Review Your Progress Daily

This is another one of those things that has to become a habit.  But I’ve noticed as I’ve done this over the last 3 weeks, I’ve completed more writing on a project that I have been holding off on for months than ever before. There are some things you simply won’t work on daily because it doesn’t make sense and that’s fine. Just make sure you’re moving forward.

Change Course When Necessary

Sometimes the action you’re taking is not going to produce a result. Be careful that you don’t confuse failure with delayed gratification. But on the flip side of that make sure you don’t confused activity with accomplishment. When you think it might be time, don’t be afraid to take one turn in a different direction.

Add New Goals to Your List

This is what is going to make it possible to accomplish more this year than you have in your whole life. Some people set a goal and once they accomplish that goal, they wipe their slate clean and celebrate. I recently set a goal to hit 4000 subscribers for this blog in the next 90 days. I’m at about 3400 right now so I might hit it sooner.  I’ll probably replace that goal with 6000 subscribers.  Don’t become a victim of your own success.

Reduce the Amount of Information You Consume

Most people who do anything related to self help are information addicts. I’ve been there.  They continually look for the next magic bullet that will solve every problem in their life.  The funny thing is almost every self help product could be your magic bullet if you just stick to one religiously. So pick one and listen to so many times that you could repeat it verbatim.

Read Books

I know this directly contradicts the point above. But I think that you will be better off for having read more books. I’ve probably read more books in the last 2 years than I did in the first 8 years of my career.

Stay Inspired

Throughout the course of any journey there are going to be days that test your patience and build your character. The difference between people who make it and those who don’t is how they respond to those days. I’ve had more than my share in this lifetime. I’ve been listening to Zig Ziglar quite a bit lately and this point I’ve made it a daily habit to listen to him for at least an hour.  Find something like that to keep you inspired.

If you need a bit of assistance in helping you stay on track I recommend this guide I picked up called Pick Four which is Seth Godin’s adaptation of Zig Ziglar’s goals program. It allows you to pick 4 goals and gives you a notebook that track each goal daily. It comes in a 4 pack and is 20 dollars well spent.  Just click on the image below and it will take you to Amazon.

I’m done with living in survival mode. It’s time to thrive, and crush it in 2012.

I like Zig I think I'll take that advice and start setting some time aside daily for motivation to focus my mind on becoming more successful. Sometimes tracking progress can be rather...emotionally straning when you don't see the results you want right away so it's good to stay motivated. Cool Post Rao!!

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

thmsbll85 Zig is definitely one of a kind. I figured if Seth Godin was an avid proponent of Zig's material it's a good way to go. As far as tracking progress goes, I know what you mean. Some days you make no progress towards certain things and that cant' be disheartening.

Nice post Srinivas. One important lesson I've learnt in life is to try another way if the current way isn't achieving results. This itself can be daunting especially if we've already put in so much effort, but well worth it.

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

stutteringhub I think we often try to force doing things a certain way because it's working for everybody else. I think changing course can definitely be daunting since it's a step into the unknown.

I love this, Srinivas :)

Yes, it's quite common. Human beings have incredible potential, and often going unaccessed.

I relate practically all of it to people not "getting in the zone" like successful athletes, musicians, innovators, etc. do.

Once a person gets in the zone, a lot of those thing take care of themselves. People take action, people show up, people study, people are inspired, people make changes...

<grin>

Now, it might be easier said than done, but maybe the information addicts can dig up some information about it :P

Here's a tidbit :)

"The mind-body connection in sports is not some New Age construct. Thoughts have direct and powerful connections to all sorts of physiological functions. Think hard enough about jumping out of an airplane, and your heart will start to race and your palms to sweat." - A classic Time Magazine article. ( http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1147173,00.html )

Jason Fonceca Glad you enjoyed it. I know what you mean about unaccessed potential. I see so many people who just settle for average for come up with thousands of excuses for where they're at with their lives.

As far as getting in the zone goes, I 'm blown away by what you you can accomplish in the zone. I can write blog posts in 30 minutes. Often I can get more done in a short block of time than I do all day when I hit the "zone." Thanks for sharing the article.

skooloflife Exactly, Srini! And it's what I'm all about, what's the ultimate way to access a human beings potential? Help them get in the zone, help them create with passion, help them... ryze up!

P.S. You may not remember this, but you commented on a blog post I wrote over a year ago on NathanHangen's old blog, it was called "Think Like A King" - I never thanked you for it, but I really appreciate it :)

Nice write up, Srini. I especially agree with not consuming too much information. My self help nature has definitely made me an information addict.

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

SeanDavis Right there with you my friend. That's exactly why I'm limiting the amount I'm consuming and as a result, making more progress.

Trading_Trends Yeah, it's amazing how much garbage we can consume. Bit by bit Iv'e been eliminating the garbage from my life. I watch less TV and whatI do watch before I go to sleep is something funny.

Hi Srini,

With my new plans, I've listed action steps for each month / week and I'm going three months out, no further. I'm rolling, now!

When I do one little task towards my goal, even if it takes 30 minutes. It's done and I'm one step closer. It feels good.

Changing course when necessary is very important. I'm open to taking new routes, and it's inevitable if you really dive into something. Heck, I'm simply amazed how quickly blogging has changed my life. And it's great to met ambitious people like you, Srini.

I'll admit that I need to work on reducing the amount of information I consume. I gave up self-help books and now look for inspiration elsewhere and however difficult, have limited my time on Twitter ... Nice post!

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

Craig McBreen that's awesome that you're rolling. Last night I sat down with davidcrandall and we put together our product roadmap. One step closer is always a good feeling. I've been hammering away at some things that last few days. Information reduction is something that we all need to work on. It's not easy considering the sheer volume of stuff out there. That's why I decided to focus purely on Zig Ziglar and nobody else. I figured if he was Seth Godin's source of inspiration, then it's probably worth modeling him.

skooloflifedavidcrandall I might try old Zig. He's one I never actually read.

Srini,

I am a big fan of Zig Ziglar from the old days of business school and still quote him from time to time. My definition of "the top" (as in, See You At) has changed dramatically from those days though.

I consume 95% less information that I did last year and stick to The Plan.

The Plan is to take it all in, change course as needed (I have lots of hats), breathe, and keep in touch with my own self and spiritual team...every moment of very day. Life feels much calmer and full of possibility. The interesting thing is how beautifully it all magically comes together when we Allow It. Kind of like keeping one ear open all of the time. That's it. No magic bullet. Just BE there, all of the time, and take action on what you're hearing.

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

Julie | A Clear Sign Thanks for the comment Julie. It's interesting how our definitions of the top evolve over time. Mine is still a work in progress and I don't feel like I'm quite there, but I'll show up every single day and take action everyday.

Reduce the amount of info you consume - That's it.

Less talk, less noise, less reading and getting more stuff done.

Stop looking at what others are doing and do more yourself.

Solid advice Srini, to crushing it in 2012... and beyond :)

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

John Falchetto I actually unsubscribed from 100's of blogs at once because I wanted to reduce it to the people I was reading regularly. I figured also if people are sharing via the social networks I'm in, then I can see those articles there. I think it's far more about getting stuff done.

Srini, these are great! And I agree with almost all of them. All but #3 - Review your progress daily. I don't DISagree with it, but just to clarify, only review the PROgress, not the DIgress. Find the points you did well. I think, as Napoleon Hill said it, we should evaluate our pros and cons each year, but if you spend too much time dwelling on shortcomings, you won't get very far. I don't think that's what you were getting at, I just wanted to add that to the mix. Great talk, bro!

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

Bryan Thompson I think you're right that we don't want to digress. Yesterday I sat down and I realized that one one of my goals I had done quite a bit and on the others I had write NOTHING. There are going to be days when you don't make any progress.

More powerful than any resolution => "I’m done with living in survival mode. It’s time to thrive, and crush it in 2012."

A declaration like that is breathtaking!

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

Sandi Amorim Thanks Sandi. For too long I've been surviving instead of thriving and I'm done with it. That''s why am at a point where I'm willing to do WHATEVER it takes to get to where I want to go this year.

Good points. It's true about reading too many self help books, I've read loads and they have all had different tips, but often I never stick to them or complete them properly. I'm now doing a combination of 3 books I've read - writing down five tasks to do each day and doing them, writing down five goals to complete this year and working towards them and writing up a long term life list of goals that I want to complete in my life time - lists galore, but so far it seems to be working! If I push myself to complete the actions, even though it might be hard at first, the momentum picks up and it becomes easier when I start seeing results.

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

maialondon I think the key is really taking action which it sounds like you're doing. The problem with consuming so many self help books is that it send us into somewhat of a tailspin and keep us from making any real progress. That's why I"ve realized a laser focus on one program is really powerful. From what I understand the more you focus on one thing the more likely you are to absorb the ideas and take action on them.

Love your point about consuming too much content. I've been reading 2 books a month for the last year or so. This year I've decided to slow it down and spend more time using/digesting what I read.

I wholeheartedly agree about picking a personal growth forum and sticking with it. That's how you go from "dabbler to devotee." And by devotee I mean being totally devoted to yourself and your growth. Finding a mentor and continuously building that relationship is the smartest things I've ever done for both my business and my personal life. It's one of the ways I stay inspired. I put myself in the company of someone whose life I admire, consistenly. Great post.

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

Syndee_Stein I love that phrase "dabbler to devotee." That is totally spot on. So many people dabble and as a result don't make progress. Mentors seem to play an instrumental role in the business of every single successful person I've talked to.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist, but man does it suck when you KNOW what needs to be done and still can't QUITE get the cogs to all line up and get it done. Great list, I'm kinda shocked I don't have a journal to keep track of goal progress on a more regular basis. Guess I'll just HAVE to go pick up another moleskine *arm-twist*

skooloflife 119 pts moderator

Elisa Doucette I feel ya. I hate that feeling of thinking "I should be do something but I'm not doing it." Or what's even worse is not knowing what to do. But I think having that accountability on a daily basis is important.
