Guest Post: More Shots= More Scores

So if you’ve read The Skool of Life or listened to BlogcastFM for any length of time, you’ll know Srini is an avid surfer, often scheduling business around the surf report for that day.

That doesn’t fly here in Chicago, so I’ll go with a hockey metaphor.

The Blackhawks are pretty big in town right now, and they’re doing pretty well – as of this writing, tied for first place in the Western conference. A big reason for their success is this:

They take more shots than any other team in the league.

Of course there are other factors that influence the game, but for the most part, more shots = more goals = more wins.

So how does this apply to social media and personal development?

Be persistent – take lots of shots.

A concept that’s been out in the networking world for a while is that every time your network doubles in size, your income does as well.

Taking lots of shots means getting your name out there, commenting on posts, building relationships, pitching guest posts – getting to know the people in your niche and in your industry. Not every shot is going to lead to something amazing, but the persistence really pays off.

It’s even more productive if your shots are on target

Taking shots in every direction might very well work, but any strategy works better with a written plan and measurable goals (check out the Skool of Life Q1 Marketing Plan for an example).

Having a written plan gives you a framework for decision-making. Everyone has a limit on the time they can spend on personal and business development each day, and consistently consulting your plan and goals will ensure you are making optimal use of your time.

For example, consider this very guest post. It may be weird for him to read, but I “targeted” Srini as a guy I wanted to develop a relationship with – we’re both in the personal development niche and I really liked the content he was creating, as well as how transparent he was about learning to earn income online. I’ve emailed him a couple times, commented at Skool of Life, commented on some of his guest posts, and conversed some on twitter.

That way he knew who I was, so when the topic of guest posting came up, I’m thinking he was more willing to listen (although it may have been different from his point of view – let us know in the comments Srini).

Notice I said “persistent,” not “relentless”

I also didn’t say annoying or exasperating. “Take lots of shots” does not mean email someone every hour until you get a response. There was a post earlier this week that talks about being patient that is a great complement to this post.

Be respectful. Be authentic.

Relationships are built on genuinely wanting to help others. People can sense right away when you’re in it for yourself or that you just want to use them to get to someone bigger.

So get out there!

Engage people. Build relationships. Provide value. You’ll find you and your business are growing much faster than if you’re sitting and waiting for people to find you!

@Ash

Agreed. I think the best experiences go to those who chase after them. A lot of people call it luck, but those are usually the people standing on the sidelines.

"Be persistent--take lots of shots."

This is the best advice all-around. I've had some cool things happen to me in the past, and people are always saying, "Wow! You're so lucky!" But in reality, the only reason I've had those cool experiences is because I put myself out there in the first place. Being hyper-conscious of the fact that you can't win if you don't play has helped me in so, so many ways. "Take lots of shots" has got to become my mantra. Love it.

@Jimi - Thanks! There will be plenty more!

@Alex - Definitely a difference between persistent and relentless. I think it just comes down to respect. Don't give up too quickly, but don't tick people off either. Be aware of when someone just isn't interested, don't take it personally, and find some who is.

Really trying not to make a "He's just not that into you"-type reference...

If you're not getting your name out there, who is?? No one! Great comparison to Hockey -- one of my favorite sports to watch, so it was easy to relate to this. Best part of the post, is when you explained at the end to not be relentless. I think many people get persistent and relentless confused.

Really nice post, Mike!
You laid out the great technique for connecting with others. As you've said, "action is where it's at". Congrats on your first guest post, look forward to more.

@Srini - Good to see you, guy.

@Nathan: Definitely agree with going down in flames over not going down at all. Most people are too scared to do that.

@Mike: Exactly. The greatest lesson unemployment taught me was not have my employer be my soul source of income. Now I have a few different incomes streams.

Absolutely - action is where it's at.

I don't know if there ever was a time when people could just sit back and achieve there dreams, but in this economic environment, I think it's more important than ever to just go for it.

The days of relying on an employer for your long-term financial health are over. It's too easy to lose everything because of poor choices or even criminal action by upper management. I'd rather be in control of my future. Like you said, even if I go down in flames, at least I took a shot.

Take shots, I love it!

I take them both at people and at opportunities. Thus far, both have worked out well for me. I always said I'd rather go down in flames than not try at all :)

Hey Mike,

I'm glad to have you here as a guest writer and hope you'll consider contributing more in the future. As far as "targeting" me, I think you went about developing a relationships exactly the right way and maybe that's a blog post you could write for your audience. If you don't I will :). I was definitely very willing to listen because of the fact that we'd be built a relationship online over the last few weeks. In fact it's kind of funny to think that I was just about to reach out to you about writing a guest post when you contacted me. As far as more shots go, absolutely. The more you take the more you'll score.

Thanks for the opportunity to write! Look forward to working with you more in the future!
