I’ve been thinking about this for the last few weeks, maybe even last few months as I’ve wrestled with the tough choices I’ve been faced with. When I think of the scenes in the movie Office Space where that woman says “sounds like somebody has a case of the Mondays” it makes me cringe.
Living for the weekends is actually a really unhealthy way to live but, for some reason we actually don’t give ourselves much time for fun during the week. The week is all about work and the weekends are for fun. That’s the way it is, that’s the way it has always been, and that’s the way it always will be. What a load of crap. That basically means that 5/7 of your life is about work and no play. To me, that’s about as unhealthy as you can get when it comes to living the way you were meant to live. Yet, the majority of people buy into this system. It shouldn’t really be that way.
5 Ways to make the weekdays a little bit more fun
Watch a Movie: Movies are a simple, cost effective way to entertain yourself during the week and to just unplug from your daily life for a while. They give us a chance to imagine, dream, and think of ideas we wouldn’t have.
Read a Book: Sometimes reading books that have absolutely no purpose and provide no value can actually be good for us because of the fact that they are not so tied to the grind of every day life.
Exercise/Sports: I think there’s plenty to be said about this. I personally hate running on treadmills and being in gyms. But, I live in California. For me, the value of the morning surf is priceless. It’s make the entire day better. But, I could take a walk on the beach, go for a bike ride or do any number of things that get me outside. The key is just to set aside some time every day to enjoy your life a little.
Dinner with friends: I always think there’s something to be said for weekday dinner parties. My ex-girlfriend actually use to go out for dinner with friends on sunday nights because it just made the whole “sunday” concept far less depressing. I figure hanging out with friends at home, good conversation, and good food are a really nice touch to make the weekdays that much better.
Board Games at Home: Let’s face it. If you are living the 9-5, even if you are at home, getting wasted on booze is really not the best weekday activity. On the weekends it’s feasible. I haven’t played board games in years, but I would imagine they provide a nice form of entertainment and a great way to spend time with friends. It might even get you back to feeling like a kid again.
Living for the weekends is bullshit because then you are essentially saying only two sevenths of your entire life is worth living. Make the weekdays a bit better.
