Commitment and Consistency in Personal Development

Commitment and consistency are the cornerstones of persuasion as discussed by Robert Cialdini. Although they are essential to persuasion of other people, you might be asking yourself what it has to do with personal development. It’s pretty  simple. For anything in the field of personal development to be truly effective you have be committed to it and consistently do it. Let’s look at a few examples.

Visualization: This is probably the best example. When we try things like visualization we often tend to want to blame the gurus, when things don’t work out.  But, often you take a look at your commitment to it, you’ll realize that somewhere along the way you stopped. You might do it for a week or two, but then it no longer becomes important. I’ve been using Kelly Howell’s Secret Universal mind meditation. I have attempted to use it a few times before but I never followed through for more than 5-6 days, and it requires me to listen to it for 6 weeks before the effects are seen.

Tape Sets: With information overload that we experience today it’s really easy to buy something because it sounds interesting and then just listen to half of it and put it aside. I found that when I finally decided to just listen to something all the way through, even if it meant, just putting it on in the background, I started to incorporate those lessons into my life much more often.

Exercise: If there’s any place where we tend to forego commitment and consistency, it’s when it comes to exercise. I  can’t honestly say I’m not completely guilty of this. But, I have been forcing myself to go to the gym or go to the beach and surf even on days when I don’t 100% feel like it because I know that commitment and consistency in one area of my life will cause it in others.

One of my friends put it best when he said, affirmations, visualizations, and any of this stuff has to be like brushing your teeth. Would you ever wake up and not brush your teeth No. You do it every single day. Negativity is so powerful in the beginning, that you have to do this every single day. It has to be as important as brushing your teeth.
