I wish I had done number 3 before the age of 24. I'd be even further ahead in my savings thanks to compound interest. Saving money is like the number one thing young people need to figure out.

The more money you have saved, the more options you have. If your boss is a dick, you can quit without fretting. If you blow four tires, no big deal, get new ones. You met the woman you're going to marry, no problem, you got cash to romance her.

Savings Savings Savings. I'd even say invest some of it. I started that at 25.

Great list! Lots of people could benefit from reading, I'm sure. It reminded me of the stories on the site I work for that are from others like you sharing mostly financial lessons learned. At the risk of sounding self-promotional, they are at this link if you're interested: http://www.lifetuner.org/beenthere. You should add yours!

Dani: Definitely useful advice here. I think if I had done just a few of these things, my life would be in much better shape.

Eric: I still think it's something I need to work on. I should probably print this post and put it up as a reminder for all the mistakes I've made.

Wow! Fantastic list! If I were to make a similar list, it would be very, very close to this list. I think number 1 "Don't buy a brand new car" is one of the very best suggestions on the list. You mentioned credit cards as being the downward spiral, but my own personal downward spiral began with new car purchases. It took me a long time to realize that a car is simply transportation. I now have 3 paid for vehicles, that are a bit old, but serve their intended purpose very nicely.

Thanks for sharing these lessons. They're really good ones and I definitely don't do all of them (totally guilty of buying things I don't need or buying them when they first come out). I'm going to have to start putting this good advice to use!
